This workshop will introduce pupils to the world of theatre, giving them an insight into the backstage skills and jobs essential for any production.   Pupils will explore a range of props and leatherwork items before creating their own magician’s bag or Second World War map pouch.   These workshops covers D&T National Curriculum requirements.

During the session, pupils will:

• Create their own magician’s bag (complete with magic trick!) or map pouch;
• Apply their mathematical knowledge of nets to create a 3D object;
• Develop their practical and creative skills, using a range of materials;
• Make an informed choice regarding the best material for the bag/pouch (taking environmental considerations into account);
• Explore the range of creative career opportunities within the arts.

This virtual session is designed to give an overview of the key aspects of leading Design & Technology (D&T) in a primary school context. With reference to the D&T Programme of Study and the Ofsted framework, delegates will consider planning, progression and assessment in D&T. Although the training will be delivered through Zoom, the session will be hands on and there will be a number of practical tasks. These are designed for non- D&T specialists and will support the development of delegate’s skills, knowledge and confidence in D&T. Examples of good practice will be shared and there will be lots of opportunity for questions and discussion.

Session One: Design and Technology: Curriculum Planning

21st October 2020, 14:00-16:00

What does it mean to be an Design and Technology subject leader? Using the National Curriculum as a starting point, participants will consider how to plan a design and technology curriculum across key stages which supports the progression of pupils’ knowledge and skills. A practical aspect, will explore how D&T can support a ‘recovery curriculum’. Subject specific research will be highlighted and shared. Session Two: Design and Technology: Subject Knowledge and Skills Development

2nd March 2021, 9:00 – 15:00

This training day is designed to develop teachers’ knowledge and understanding of the Design and Technology Programme of Study. This practical day will explore the practical application of different areas of the D&T curriculum. Each activity will identify the key skills and knowledge that should be taught in Key Stage 1 and 2. Session Three: Design and Technology: Cooking in the Curriculum

21st May 2021, 13:00 – 16:00

Delegates will learn practical skills to teach children of all ages to prepare and cook healthy nutritious recipes in line with the statutory requirements for the design and technology curriculum. This training course will explore Mechanical Systems in the Primary Design and Technology national curriculum.  It is designed for teachers with responsibility for D&T.  However, it will also be of use to class teachers.

Delivered by national D&T primary education consultant, Gareth Pimley, this session will provide delegates with a strategic overview of the subject before focusing on practical skills, techniques and know how in relation to mechanical and electrical systems.  Delegates will design and make products which they will be able to take back to school.

This twilight teacher training is delivered by experienced teacher and artist, Anna Pickard, and will explore how felt making can be used across the curriculum providing a vehicle for literacy, history, geography and science.
