During lockdown, some of our youth music ensembles have been working hard with the young people to create socially distanced music videos as they haven’t been able to rehearse together.

The first of these videos is now complete, from Roots Alive, a youth folk group made up of 9 young musicians playing along with the ArtForms staff members who run the group. They’re playing their version of the traditional Scots song, We’re no awa’ tae bide awa’, followed by an absolute Roots classic – Bear Dance!

More videos will be coming soon from other groups, so watch this space!

It was very fitting that this international conference, organised by Leeds City Council, included performances by young Leeds musicians, and they were a credit to the city. A choir from the Co-operative Academy sang at the Metropolitan Hotel at the opening of the conference, and two players from Roots Alive, the City of Leeds Youth Music folk group, performed at a reception in the evening at the Tiled Hall. The two musicians: Róisín Howitt from Roundhay School, and Gráinne Lacy-Roberts from St Mary’s Menston Catholic Voluntary Academy, delighted the delegates with expertly-played renditions of tunes from Ireland and beyond. The pair are also members of the National Youth Folk Ensemble. It should be noted that this was one of the worst days in the year regarding the traffic, and Gráinne and Róisín managed to arrive at the venue on time by respectively using the train, and getting out of the car and walking so that they didn’t miss their performance. Amazing talent and dedication!
