Free Home Learning Music Resources for Primary Children

Over Lockdown 1 the ArtForms National Curriculum Music team produced over one hundred videos for schools to use when we weren’t able to teach face to face. These were designed specifically for use both in school with keyworker children, and for home learning. The content covers all phases from EYFS through to KS2. Schools and parents have commented how much children have enjoyed and benefited from these regular music curriculum sessions.

For the duration of this lockdown we have made a sample of those videos available on our YouTube channel to support all schools.

Arts Home Learning Ideas: Week 5

Keep busy with these creative gems

First Site have worked with UK artists to put together a creative activity pack, Art Is Where the Home Is. They launched their first pack a few weeks ago. Over the weekend, they shared their second pack, with contributions from different artists, involving lots of different, fun things to do at home. Both packs are free to download and all of the activities are accessible and don’t require specialist materials.

Watch the Leeds Theatre Company Blah Blah Blah production The Vulture’s Song (suitable for children aged 9+) and have a go at some of the follow up family or school activities.

Take part in free online dance classes from RJC Dance (children’s classes are at Tuesdays 11 – 11.30 and Saturdays 10 – 10.30). They can be viewed live via Facebook or watched at a time to suit you via their YouTube Channel.

For aspiring engineers, the James Dyson Foundation have put together Challenge Cards with a series of challenges that involve creativity and can be undertaken in the home (some require adult supervision).

Practise storytelling and have a go at making a miniature book for your toys or follow Woodrow Phoenix’s guide to creating your own comic strip.

5 YouTube channels to support curriculum music

In the current climate, teachers and parents alike are looking for resources to help children learn in new ways as the majority of pupils are at home. The internet can be a treasure trove of resources, but with all this choice it’s difficult to know where to start – so our National Curriculum team of qualified teachers have got you covered with these five recommendations for YouTube channels that will get kids moving, learning, and enjoying their music lessons from home!

1. Ollie Tunmer
Ollie Tunmer from The Beat Goes On is posting regular rhythm warm ups and exercises during the crisis on his YouTube Channel – great for a bit of movement, rhythm and pulse work!

2. Koo Koo Kanga Roo
Koo Koo Kanga Roo – Great for Kids of all ages, stay active, learn the dance moves, keep the rhythm and follow the pulse to the music. Our favourites are Dinosaur Stomp and Unicorns R Real!

3. Musication
The Musication Youtube Channel has lots of really good videos to use in their Percussion Play-Along Playlist. Get the pots and pans out and get a few children in school or the whole family at home involved!!

4. Mr D. Morley
A youtube channel that includes lots of useful short videos ranging from how to read notes to the history of rock music.

5. Brian Gossard
A youtube channel built by Brian Gossard that includes lots of educational videos explaining how rests and different dynamics work.

Music Home Learning Resources

In the past week we’ve seen a burst of creativity from people continuing to centre and prioritise music, arts and learning while many of us find ourselves at home. Music is a great way to relax, have fun and keep your mind sharp, no matter what age you are. Because of this, the ArtForms team has been working hard to create some resources to help pupils to continue their learning and music making independently. We are also working on other ways to bring music learning to your living room and to continue to deliver as much of our teaching as possible over the coming weeks, so watch this space!

Access Art have launched a Drawing Challenge. Register online, to receive a PDF with 3 drawing warm up exercises and 2 drawing projects.
Gomersal Primary Art Blog: ideas for creative activities for each day of the week.
Get Weaving: watch Agnis Smallwood demonstrate how to make a loom out of card. There’s also a handy teacher’s guide.
DAZL Dance are continuing their classes through Facebook with an option to join in, if you aren’t a current member. Full information here.
Leeds Year of Reading have compiled a long list of online resources around books and reading.
