This year’s concert will be held on the 1^st July, and marks a triumphant comeback for the bi-annual event, which has become a cherished highlight in Leeds’ cultural calendar. Designed to showcase the talent and hard work of children from both primary and secondary schools, the evening will be a true testament to the power of music in bringing people together. A Stage for Young Talent

The concert offers pupils a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform on the iconic Leeds Arena stage. From choral pieces and orchestral arrangements to energetic instrumental ensembles, the programme will highlight the diversity and creativity of music education in Leeds.

Over 80 Schools United by Music

With participation from more than 80 schools, the concert is a unique demonstration of unity and collaboration. A teacher involved in the previous concert shared: “This concert is about so much more than just the music. It’s about confidence, teamwork, and creating memories that these children will carry with them for a lifetime. Seeing them perform at such a prestigious venue is nothing short of magical.”

Community at its Heart

The Celebration Concert isn’t just about the performers – it’s also a chance for families, friends, and the wider Leeds community to come together and support young people. The City of Leeds Youth music groups will be returning along with ArtForms Music Centres.

From September 2024 the West Yorkshire Music Hub replaces LMEP.

Although this funding goes some way to supporting extra music provision, we recognise that for some schools budgets are still very tight and more funding is needed to help deliver quality musical experiences. Due to the success of our previous Autumn project, Leeds City Art Gallery and Leeds Music Education Partnership (LMEP) have teamed up once again to bring you an immersive Arts project which all schools can register a class for during the summer term. This FREE Art and Music project is aimed at KS2 and KS3 children and will take place in Leeds Art Gallery on selected dates in the summer term.

Project outline:

• This project will link Art activities with music composition and improvisation through a common theme.
• Leeds Art Gallery will host an online gallery visit for each visiting school, and introduce the themes of the visit and provide interactive activities prior to the session at the Gallery.
• A morning or afternoon visit for a designated class to the Art gallery either on Friday 28th June or Friday 12th July, which will include an opportunity to make music and art in the gallery space, and gives the chance for children to explore the latest Art exhibition at the gallery.

The project is fully funded by Leeds Art gallery and LMEP, and you will be able to get support with transport costs to the Art Gallery via LMEP’s innovative grant. Music Connect is our programme of curriculum support for music leaders in all Leeds schools.  The termly Music Leaders Network is an important part of Music Connect, bringing music leaders together from primary schools across Leeds to share experiences and discuss the latest developments in music education.

Since the start of the pandemic our network meetings moved online, increasing attendance due to the convenience of accessing a twilight session from school or home.  However, we really value face to face events for Music Leaders to truly network which is why we have created the new conference.

This year the conference will include –

An Ofsted Deep Dive panel discussion sharing experiences from Joe Barton, CEO of the LEODIS trust and an Ofsted inspector, Yvonna Georghiou, Music Lead at Otley St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and Annie Bradbury, Music Lead at Cockburn Haigh Road Academy.

There will also be workshops from –

• Sue Nicholls – A Fresh Look at Composition for key stages 1&2.  Sue is a vastly experienced music teacher who works nationwide as a music education consultant delivering workshops, seminars, keynotes and CPD as well as being published author for Collins (Music Express) and OUP.
• Sing Up – Sharon Durrant from https://www.singup.org will explore the new Sing Up curriculum and provide Music Leaders with free access to resources that can be shared with the non-specialist Music teachers in their school.
• Musical Futures – Fran Hannan from www.musicalfuturesonline.org will lead an interactive session on the chair drumming resources from their free resource library which attendees can use with both their classes and share with colleagues.

Music Champion School status is awarded to any schools in Leeds who have made a significant impact on their pupils’ lives through their music offer and who have an outstanding commitment to music education. Recipients of the award receive a Music Mark membership (the strategic lead organisation in the UK for Music Education), a framed certificate, a large outdoor banner and a digital Music Champion logo to include on all school publicity. Champion Schools also have access to other music events and workshops provided by our partners during the year. This year, we will be inviting successful schools to accept the award at one of our Youth Music Summer Festival events in the city. The award will be reviewed every 3 years from the date you receive the status to maintain consistency across all Music Champion Schools.

There are currently 36 Music Champion Schools in Leeds including 26 Primary schools, 8 Secondary schools and two Special schools. Last year we were pleased to welcome Corpus Christi Primary, Farsley Springbank Primary, Highfield Primary, Low Road Primary, Stanningley Primary and Windmill Primary.

Following on from the success of our previous Samba projects, we’d like to invite you to bring a class of Y5/6 children to take part in Leeds Big Samba 2020. This project will consist of a CPD session for teachers, a workshop for children in school, a rehearsal at Pudsey Civic Hall and a performance at Leeds First Direct Arena on Monday 22^nd July 2020. Music Connect receives funding from LMEP, the Leeds Music Education Partnership (of which ArtForms is the lead partner), which enables us to offer our training sessions to Leeds Schools and Academies at no charge.
Schools are entitled to send up to two delegates to any Music Connect training session. All training sessions are subject to change and will be regularly updated.

Leeds Lieder are offering exciting opportunities for young people across Leeds to broaden their cultural horizons, explore their talents, and develop their voices through two education projects funded in part by Leeds Music Education Partnership: Discovering Lieder (KS2) and Cool Lieder (KS3).

The award winning Discovering Lieder Project introduces KS2 children to the world of Art Song and the joys of attending a classical concert. The project takes place over one week in which the Lieder visit each participating school for an hour long workshop during the week, and then see everyone at the culmination concert at 2pm on the Friday.

In the workshop, the Lieder’s team of three professional musicians and educators (two singers and a pianist) sing songs in several languages and workshop the themes of the poetry along with discussing the ins and outs of attending a concert of classical song. There are plenty of opportunities for the children (and teachers) to sing in the workshop session and everyone works together at the end to compose a special verse to a song by Schubert. The concert on Friday is an exciting hour of Art Song in several languages, and a finale in which each class stands to sing their very own verse!

The project is for one group of year 3, 4, 5 or 6 children.

The Cool Lieder Project works with KS3 children and takes place over three weeks with a culmination concert on the last Friday of the project.

The project involves three professional animateurs; a singer, pianist and another artist (often a storyteller, poet or composer), making three visits into school. They will deliver three one-hour workshops to introduce students to the sound of the projected singing voice; encourage them to see classical music as an enjoyable and relevant art form; and offer some quality vocal training and cross-curricular links. Working together on songs by composers from Schubert to Britten, the sessions focus on confident, expressive and healthy singing. Everybody is then invited down to a concert of songs performed by the participants and all woven together by the animateurs who take the student’s reactions to the music as their inspiration.

The project is for one class of Year 7, 8 or 9 children, or a group of around 30 pupils from these years specially selected for their love of singing and performance.

Leeds Lieder run their projects twice per year in both the Spring and Autumn terms, fundraising tirelessly so that their projects are completely free to schools. Leeds Lieder are funded by the Arts Council England, LMEP, Sir George Martin Trust and the Jean Meikle Music Trust and supported by Northern Ballet and Leeds Town Hall.
