ArtForms achieves Artsmark Partner status

ArtForms is pleased to announce that it has been awarded Artsmark Partner status.

The Artsmark Partnership Programme, run by Arts Council England, is an endorsed network of organisations who support Artsmark registered schools on their journey to embed arts and culture across the curriculum.

Jo Richardson, Partnership Manager at ArtForms, says:

“We’re delighted to have been awarded Artsmark Partner status. Schools embarking on their Artsmark journey can be confident that music activities and support services provided by ArtForms and Leeds Music Education Partnership (LMEP) are approved and appropriate for inclusion in their Artsmark music development plans.”

Schools who are working towards Artsmark can access a range of support including Innovative Activity grants and Artsmark registration subsidies.

A Successful Violet Night at Arts @ Trinity

On March 22^nd the third ArtForms Violet Night was held. The event is dedicated to promoting small scale acoustic music making. Groups are undirected and so highly developed communicative skills between performers are normally in evidence. This night was no exception, and we witnessed amazingly high levels of musical skills in groups from Primrose Lane Primary, Wetherby Music Centre, Co-op Academy and Pudsey Priesthorpe Co-op Academy. Music was wide ranging, with many different genres and instruments represented. However, what all groups demonstrated was acute listening, sensitivity and courage, with performers leading and following as appropriate. It was also wonderful to hear an original composition from one of the singers from Priesthorpe Co-op Academy.

The evening was warm and friendly, avoiding the cut throat nature of X Factor type events, or the urge for the performers to be the highest, fastest or loudest. However, a prize was given for the best communicators of the evening and this was awarded to the singers from Co-op Academy: Franklyna, Giulia and Cody.

Roots Alive performed in the second half. This is the City of Leeds Youth Music Folk Group. The group has a high reputation, with four of its members belonging to the National Youth Folk Ensemble. The group lived up to its reputation, finishing the evening off with its exciting contemporary arrangements of original folk material, and several own compositions. The set was over 30 minutes, with all music performed from memory. Performers thrilled with their ability to both rouse audiences with exciting dances, and to move them to tears with plaintive songs.

Free singing sessions for secondary schools

ArtForms invites secondary schools to join us for two sensational free singing sessions!

The first will be held on Tuesday 13th March, 10am-3pm at the Moyes Centre, Bishop Young Academy. The theme for this session is ‘Developing Your Choir’ and will include special guest Mark de Lisser, a vocal coach on ITV’s ‘The Voice’. This is an amazing opportunity for you and a group up to 15 of your students to work with Mark de Lisser and his team. Mark has worked with singers from all genres and coaches not only on vocal technique and delivery but also on stage craft and performance.

The second session is on Friday 23rd March 9.30am-3pm at Corpus Christi Catholic College – new ‘Find Your Voice’ CPD from Musical Futures. Explore how to deliver outstanding music teaching with very little equipment/resources. Experience first-hand how ‘Find Your Voice’ can have personal, social and emotional benefits as well as musical skills development.

Get ready to tap your toes, clap your hands, and have a wonderful evening, because the Leeds Youth Jazz-Rock Orchestra is back with another gig! Come and see the talented musicians of LYJRO playing at 8.30pm on Thursday 21^st December at the New Headingley Social Club, led as always by enthusiastic musician and conductor Brendan Duffy.

A Fantastic LSMA Christmas Concert

Christmas is officially underway, now that the Leeds Schools’ Music Association’s Christmas Concert has launched it in style! A full house at Leeds Town Hall heard 450 fantastic young musicians bring in the festive season. A huge thank you and congratulations to everyone involved who organised and performed in this wonderful evening of musical entertainment. We also managed to raise a massive £1,357.13 for the work of UNICEF on the night.

Music Centre Enrolment

As we come back into September, our music centres will soon be open for enrolment again! The music centres offer a wide variety of music groups for all ages and abilities. Take a look at the leaflet which shows what is on offer at each centre, or find your nearest music centre.

The current enrolment dates are as follows:

9^th September: East Leeds, Horsforth, North Leeds (Saturday), Rothwell, South Leeds and Wetherby.
16^th September: Guiseley
21^st September: Steel Pans
28^th September: North Leeds (Thursday)
