Get the most out of sketchbooks in your school

3pm – 4.30pm, Thursday 30th April 2020

For Key Stage 2 pupils, the use of sketchbooks is a National Curriculum requirement. Used effectively, sketchbooks can be embedded across the curriculum and can allow children to focus their thoughts, think creatively and reflect on their learning. Using a sketchbook can be beneficial for children of all ages.

This session will explore how sketchbooks can be developed as a rich resource, for recording, researching and documenting pupils’ ideas and inspiration. It is designed to give you the confidence to develop the use of sketchbooks in your own classroom.

Delegates will:

Make their own sketchbook
Explore ideas and strategies to use sketchbooks to support subjects across the curriculum
Experimenting with mark making

Art, Craft and Design has been an integral part of the National Curriculum since it’s inception in 1989. However, the status of the subject in some schools has been affected by other aspects of the education system, not least the pressure of accountability measures in English and Maths.

ArtForms Arts Development have worked with primary Art, Craft and Design subject leaders for almost 20 years. For 2019/20 we have developed three training sessions (Autumn Term: 1 x full day; Spring Term: 1 x half day; Summer Term: 1 x half day) designed to develop primary Art Leaders subject knowledge and expertise in leading the subject. Each session can be purchased individually on a PAYG basis. Alternatively you can book the training as a package of three at a cost of £380 (saving £110).

Session One: Curriculum Planning: Art, Craft and Design, 18th October 2019, 9am – 3.30pm

Led by Mandy Barratt from Gomersal Primary School, this day will have a specific focus on how to develop an art, craft and design curriculum for your school, in the light of the new Ofsted Framework. The day will support delegates to:

Articulate their school’s vision for Art, Craft and Design

Consider the value and importance of Art, Craft and Design for their pupils

Audit the current Art, Craft and Design provision

Develop art planning which can be used to support class teachers

Develop understanding of the role and responsibilities of a primary art subject leader

Delegates will create a planning ‘big book’, which they will be able to take away and continue to use as a working document for their role as subject leader.

Session Two:Excellent Design in Art, 5th February 2020 , 1pm – 4pm

Led by artist and teacher, Anna Pickard, this half day training will explore the Design element of the Art, Craft and Design programme of study, teasing out Design as a distinct aspect of visual art, in its own right.

Session Three: Excellent Craft in Art, 10th June 2020, 1pm – 4pm

Taking place at Armley Mills, a former textiles mill, this half day training will consider what craft is, the relevance of craft in the twenty-first century and how it can be embedded across the curriculum.

Follow the above links to book individual sessions.
