In Leeds, girls are significantly more inactive than boys, with less than half of all girls meeting the 60 minutes a day recommendation.  Dance could be one way of addressing this gap.  As well as being fun, social, creative and inclusive, evidence indicates that it can have a positive effect on mental health and well being, with a particular impact on brain function and memory.

To support teachers to plan and implement a dance curriculum, as part of the Programme of Study for PE, ArtForms Arts Development, working with Active Schools+ and Northern Arts Factory has developed a Dance CPD programme for primary teachers.

The network is for teachers who may not be dance specialists, but are teaching dance in their school.  Over the course of the school year, there will be three training sessions led by Northern Arts Factory (Autumn Term: 1 x full day; Spring Term: 1 x half day; Summer Term: 1 x half day).  Each session can be purchased individually on a PAYG basis. Alternatively you can book the training as a package of three at a cost of £380 (saving £110).

Session One: Curriculum Planning: Dance, 3rd October 2019, 9am – 4pm will focus on how to implement a rich and engaging Dance curriculum in school which supports pupil’s progression and assessment.  Two key stands will be explored:
– Learning in dance – children engaged in the process of understanding dance as an art form in its own right, including different styles and techniques, choreography and how we experience dance as an audience.
– Learning through Dance – children experiencing dance as a vehicle to develop their learning and understanding across the curriculum.

Session Two: Let’s Dance, 17th March 2020, 1pm – 4pm will consider after school dance clubs; practical implementation and how the content of after school clubs can support and enhance classroom delivery.

Session Three: Inspired Dance, 24th June 2020, 1pm – 4pm will explore dance from other cultures and how dance can be used as a way of developing cultural understanding.

Use drama to develop your pupil’s voice!

Drama can be an effective tool for engaging pupils in their learning across the curriculum.  It can also be used to support and develop pupil’s speaking and listening skills, providing pupil’s with tangible experiences to talk about and developing their confidence to express their thoughts out loud.

This is a full day training course, delivered by Susan Coles and designed for teachers who have responsibility for leading Art, Craft and design in their primary schools.  The day will look at skills progression, planning and assessment, with a particular focus on painting and drawing.   There will be practical activities embedded into the day.  This is the ideal course for art leaders who are keen to address progression in art throughout their school.

Bringing Literacy to Life with Music – Tuesday 6^th June, 12.45-4.30pm, Pudsey Civic Hall LS28 5TA

Sue Nicholls (http://suenichollsmusic.com/ ) and Hilary Miles will be exploiting the natural links between story-telling and music, and exploring accessible musical activities that reinforce and underpin vocabulary, rhyme and many aspects of language work at KS1 and 2.  They will bring a bunch of new songs and raps that tell traditional and published tales in new and exciting ways, using props, puppets, drama and percussion for scene-setting. This course is suitable for both non-specialists and specialists, and would especially be ideal for Literacy leaders interested in considering new ways to approach Literacy teaching in school.  The course is free of charge for staff in all Leeds Schools and Academies and up to two colleagues can attend from each school. Book via the Leeds for Learning website: http://www.leedsforlearning.co.uk/Event/37594

The meeting is an opportunity to meet other Music Leaders and explore current issues in Music Education both through discussion and in a practical way.

At the last meeting we looked at singing in schools and identified some areas in which schools would like to develop their provision.  We’ll be looking at two of those areas in our session on the 8^th – developing choirs and discovering what outstanding provision in whole school singing assemblies looks like.

Taking place at Leeds College of Art, the focus of the day is on raising the attainment and aspiration of our most vulnerable pupils, within the context of the world of art and design.   The day is designed to enthuse and excite teachers of art and design from all education phases. Teachers will have the opportunity to develop their own skills and learn about different progression routes in the arts, within the Yorkshire region.
