Hub Updates

ArtForms Leeds

This spring, ArtForms Leeds hosted a vibrant array of events and opportunities for children and young people to demonstrate their musical and artistic talents. Highlights included:

Orchestral music day

A fantastic opportunity for Leeds students to play alongside professional musicians. Meliora Collective  worked alongside our City of Leeds Youth Orchestra Conductor, Mark Edwards to support students to rehearse and perform a symphony in a day.

KS1 Little Sing

An interactive and immersive performance event attended by 600 children. This year’s theme of Marvellous minibeasts enthralled children who thoroughly enjoyed singing and dancing at the minibeast rave!

Youth Music Prom

Students from the Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra, City of Leeds Youth String Orchestra and City of Leeds Youth Wind Orchestra performed at Pudsey Civic Hall for 350 children and young people, inspiring them to learn to play an instrument, join an ensemble or just appreciate the music and dance.

Notes Around the World

Our music centres at North and South Leeds held an innovative session of workshops giving all participants the opportunity to experience something new – from Taiko to DJ scratching to graphic scores there was something for everyone to enjoy. Certainly an event we’re hoping to expand next year!

These events not only provide performance opportunities but also foster a sense of community and growth among musicians, young and old. We are especially looking forward to our Leeds Youth Music Celebration Concert at the arena on 1st July, which will showcase over 1000 children and young people across the city. Information about this and all our upcoming events can be found here on the ArtForms website.

Musica Kirklees

Musica Kirklees have just launched their ‘Spotlight on…’ initiative to bring attention to a variety of instruments and raise awareness of the range of opportunities open to learners. Kirklees school pupils are invited to apply for up to 3 free sessions of hands-on tuition with an instrument included.

The spotlight is shining on the cello as we go into the summer term and with plans to feature a selection of brass, woodwind and strings over the coming months, we’re hoping to highlight the special qualities of each instrument as we go.

The Spotlight series is an offshoot of Musica Kirklees’s existing Give it a Go programme which is already active in Kirklees schools. Backed up by a social media campaign, the Spotlight initiative is Kirklees-wide and will inspire more young people to take up an instrument.

Opera North

The Opera North Youth Company and Youth Orchestra will be opening the 25/26 Opera Season, performing Judtih Weir’s ‘The Secret Of The Black Spider’. Described by composer Judith Weir as ‘a historical thriller’, The Secret Of The Black Spider tells two interrelated stories. One is a legendary tale set in the 15th century of villagers terrorised by a giant spider that emerges from the hand of the heroine, Christina; the other based on a news report of the strange happenings that followed the excavation of a Polish tomb in the 1970’s…

This is the UK premier of the ‘Hamburg’ version of the opera. More details can be found here: https://www.operanorth.co.uk/whats-on/the-secret-of-the-black-spider/
